“The best way I can help now is if I resign,” he said, continuing to deny allegations of his sexual harassment. The withdrawal will take effect after 14 days.
Governor Lt. Katie Hohola will be the first woman to head New York.
Kuomo had faced pressure to resign from fellow Democrats, including President Joe Biden.
His resignation comes just a year after his public profile reached new heights in the early days of the pandemic, as millions of Americans turned to his pointless television briefings every day.
This is the second time in 13 years that the Governor of New York has resigned.
Why did Kuomo resign?
An independent investigation by the New York Attorney General’s Office revealed that the 63-year-old Kuomo sexually harassed 11 women, including government employees.
The women claimed that he made sexual comments, touched or abducted them inappropriately, and kissed them without consent.-
This report led many prominent Democrats to turn against the Cuomo. His fellow New York Democrats had begun planning charges against him. He is also awaiting a criminal investigation.
In announcing his resignation on Tuesday, Kuomo continued to reject allegations of sexual harassment, but said he wanted to apologize “deeply, deeply” to all the women who may have been offended by his actions.
“I think I have never crossed the line against anyone. But I didn’t realize to what extent the line was drawn, “he said.
He added that his instinct was to “fight the dispute because he believes it is politically motivated”. But he said he was stepping down because the scandal’s “current trajectory” would draw months of attention and “cost taxpayers millions of dollars”.
Kuomo said the allegations had damaged his relationship with his daughters.
“I have been sitting on the couch with the accusers, hearing ugly accusations. I have seen their eyes and facial expressions. It hurts, “he said.
He said he “never intentionally disrespected a woman.”
After the governor’s announcement, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a longtime critic of the governor, said that “it is time” for him to resign.
White House spokesman Jen Psaki told reporters that Biden had not spoken to his old friend since the report was published. He praised the “brave women who came forward” to accuse the Cuomo, noting that Biden had called for him to resign last week.
