Car traffic from Ivangorod in Russia to Narva in Estonia will be closed for two years while reconstruction of the border crossing is carried out, the governor of Russia’s Leningrad Region, Alexander Drozdenko, announced.
On the other hand, the head of the Narva municipality, Katri Raika, admitted that this will lead to a dead end in the Estonian city, as the logistics route between St. Petersburg and the West will be disrupted.
“Of course, the goal is to create anxiety among Narva residents,” Raika admitted, adding that bus and car traffic was secured during other repair works.
Raika said that the people of Narva, among which there are many Russian speakers, are patient and will overcome the difficulties and focus more and more on Tallinn and Europe.
Drozdenko informed that pedestrians will be able to cross the border even during the reconstruction works. They should start in 2023.
Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu told public broadcaster ERR that the ministry has not officially received information from the Russian side. He added that unofficially, Russian officials have been talking about the long-term reconstruction of the border crossing since February. Estonia requests Russia to provide official information.
Reinsalu added that such actions by Russia can be considered as foreign policy pressure, however, he stressed that it will not have a physical impact on Estonia, as it has other border crossings and international transport to Russia can go through other border crossings. border.
Ingmārs Ross, head of the bus transport company “Lux Express” in Estonia, informed that the company, which still continues to fly between Tallinn and St. Petersburg, is developing an action plan to ensure a minimum transport link even the next year.
It assumed that it could offer bus service to the point where it is possible, then the passengers would cross the border and the bus would meet them again on the other side.
