Governor of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Viktor Bungtilu Laiskodat requested that the school entry hours for high school level students in NTT be brought forward to 05.00 WITA. Viktor conveyed this in the agenda for a meeting with school principals on Thursday (23/2).

Viktor’s instructions were recorded in a 1 minute 43 second video circulating on social media. Viktor was seen speaking in front of and accompanied by the Head of the NTT Education and Culture Office Linus Lusi.

“So we change it, do we agree or not, school principals?” asked Viktor who was greeted with ‘agreement’ by the meeting attendees.

Initially, Viktor said that children should get used to waking up at 04.00 WITA. Then he calculated the estimated half hour of preparation, and the next half hour was when he left for school. Thus, high school level students are expected to be able to arrive at school at 05.00 WITA.

Viktor said that one of his considerations was that, on average, high school students sleep at 22.00 WITA at the latest, so that according to him, six hours of sleep is enough for students.

“Junior high school is not allowed. High school? he starts sleeping at 10 pm,” he said.

Viktor said the culture of starting school early aims to hone the discipline and work ethic of students. He also believes that this new policy will be difficult for both students and teachers.

However, the man who served as a member of the RI DPR RI for the NasDem faction for the 2014-2018 period said that change requires sacrifice.

“All those who make changes must be sick,” said Viktor.

CNNIndonesia.com has contacted the Head of the NTT Education and Culture Office Linus Lusi via written messages and telephone calls to confirm the clarity of the new policy. However, the person concerned has not provided a response until this news was written.
