The Government’s Latest Answer on the Discourse of Postponing Elections

The government provides the latest answers to questions talk about postponing elections. Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md emphasized that the government remains focused on preparing for the 2024 general election.

“So the government is still preparing a 2024 schedule for the presidential and vice presidential elections, as well as the legislative and regional elections simultaneously. The affairs of the political parties in the DPR please. We will work professionally according to their duties and functions,” said Mahfud Md during a working visit in Sampang Regency, East Java. , Sunday (20/3/2022).

Mahfud then explained about the circulation of invitations to events containing an agenda for discussing the postponement of the election which was planned to be held in Balikpapan, Monday (21/3). The event also invited the KPU and the Balikpapan City Bawaslu.

Mahfud said the agenda was cancelled. The event was canceled because it gave rise to wild rumors that the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs had an agenda talk about postponing elections.

“Yesterday there was news in Balikpapan, he said the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs invited Bawaslu, invited the KPU to discuss the issue of postponing the election,” he said.

“Yes, we cancel it, because it will cause wild issues as if we had an agenda, when in fact we want to explain to the public that the government’s agenda remains,” he continued.

Mahfud then assessed that the discourse regarding the postponement of the election that appeared in political parties, the DPR, NGOs and mass organizations was a normal thing to do.

“That political parties, DPR, NGOs, mass organizations, want to discuss it, just discuss it. Please discuss, what the outcome is a political matter. But for the government, I have now prepared. In 2024 there will be elections for President and Vice President, legislative and regional elections simultaneously We have prepared that,” continued Mahfud.

In addition, Mahfud mentioned the current state of democracy which is different from the New Order regime. According to him, the current state of democracy frees the public to give their opinion.

“This is a democratic country. During the New Order era, political parties were not allowed to talk, NGOs were also not allowed to talk, the main thing was that everyone was reprimanded. Now talk,” said Mahfud.
