At the last meeting of the Economy and Development Committee, the government’s project to ban trading on Christmas Eve and to allow it on Sunday, December 10, was rejected. 19 people were in favor of its rejection and seven were against.
Stanisław Szwed, still Secretary of State at the Ministry of Family and Social Policy, justified that the change was “justified by the special time of Christmas Eve, a time of preparations and family meetings.” Members of the current opposition pointed out that the project was submitted too late and it was scandalous.
It is outrageous that the Sejm is only dealing with this matter now, because PiS had a whole year to deal with this matter. Waldemar Buda, then Minister of Development and Technology, already said in June that this problem needed to be solved and there was only one direction – Christmas Eve must be a day off, and trade should be allowed on Sunday, December 10.
However, the government did nothing in this matter and the draft act, which takes up two paragraphs on an A4 sheet of paper, was presented only on November 20. Meanwhile, according to the Labor Code, employees should receive their December schedules by November 23.
Even IKEA, which usually tries to be apolitical, expressed its opinion on the matter. “IKEA stores have been closed on Christmas Eve for several years, out of respect for our employees. However, like the entire industry, we are expecting the second shopping Sunday in December. As the retail industry, we have been asking the government to regulate this issue since spring. The bill, although adopted, by the Council of Ministers on November 14, it was not sent to Parliament. According to the Labor Code, employees should know their schedules for December by November 23,” the company wrote on Protal X on November 20.
Finally, at Monday’s meeting, the committee adopted the Poland 2050 project, which will be processed in the Sejm. It assumes that the trading days will be on December 10 and 17. However, on December 24, there will be a trading ban.
