The government began to have resistance in the provinces on the same day that it began to distribute the Chinese Sinopharm vaccines, which as they cannot yet be applied to people over 60, announced that it will allocate to inoculate teachers.
The Buenos Aires Minister of Health, Fernán Quirós, was the first to speak out against that decision and said that the batch of Chinese vaccines that the City will receive (33,300 doses) will be used to complete the immunization “of health personnel with fewer 60 years old. “
The porteño Kirchnerism, through the legislator Lorena Pokoi, presented a request for reports against the “unilateral announcement by the Buenos Aires government of failing to comply with this step stipulated in the last Assembly of the Federal Council of Education.” The City responded with the segmentation scheme that the Ministry of Health had developed before starting the vaccination.
According to this scheme, teachers were in sixth place, behind health personnel, those over 70 and nursing home residents, those over 60, personnel from the Armed Forces, security and prison system, and adults between 18 and 60 belonging to risk groups.
In the United Kingdom, progress was first made with nursing home residents – the group with the highest mortality during the first wave – and their caregivers, to then continue with first-line health personnel and those over 80. Then they worked on age ranges, without distinction of activity and piercing the 60-year line that was drawn in Argentina.
The government of Boris Johnson planned after the first round of super priorities, that everyone over 75 should be vaccinated, then those over 70 and people with vulnerabilities. Later it was the turn for those over 65, then people between 16 and 64 with comorbidities and from there those over 60, then those over 55 and after them those over 50.
Priority groups or age groups? How does the vaccination plan follow?
The City is not the only district to object to Carla Vizzotti’s decision. There are Argentine provinces that ask to discuss the idea of vaccinating young teachers without comorbidities instead of other people who do have them and therefore have a much higher risk of death.
Axel Kicillof, for example, wanted to vaccinate adults with risky diseases after inoculating those over 60.
