“This was one of the things we discussed at the coalition meeting on Tuesday. We have a coalition agreement on it,” said Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Marian Jurečka (KDU-ČSL).
Currently, the retirement age is being increased so that it gradually stops at 65 years of age for everyone. But Jurečka wants to break this limit. According to the proposal that he sent to the House of Representatives, the retirement age will be based on life expectancy, with an increase of up to two months per year so that pensioners spend an average of 21.5 years in retirement. The class of 1966 was supposed to retire at 65 years and two months.

However, the coalition will now cancel this with an amendment. The government accepted the proposal of the Czech Demographic Society, according to which the retirement age would be increased by a maximum of one month. The company justified this by saying that otherwise there would be a risk of “unreasonable differences” in the time of receiving the pension.
Newly, the year 1966 should retire at 65 years and one month and, for example, the year 1978 then at 66 years and one month. People born in 2001 then only at the age of 68. According to the original variant, it could have been up to 70 years and 5 months.
Review after five years
According to STAN Member of Parliament Pavla Pivoňka Vaňková, how the situation develops should be evaluated every five years, and adjustments could be made accordingly.
“It makes more sense to evaluate a generation after five years, and not to progress from year to year. Because when a pandemic comes, such as covid, the death rate can be different,” she told Novinka. According to her, these are, for example, early retirements for demanding professions. There is no agreement on that yet.
“It’s fairer, there won’t be such big differences in the time spent in retirement between generations. In addition, the time to retirement will increase more slowly, so the fact that people will spend a quarter of their lives in it will be preserved,” commented demographer Tomáš Fiala, who participated in the proposal of the Czech Demographic Society.
According to the head of TOP 09 and the chairwoman of the Chamber of Deputies, Markéta Pekarová Adamová, this is the result of long negotiations. “For our party, it is key to look at the contribution of the entire reform and the sustainability of its components, which has been fulfilled,” she said.

Trade unions strongly opposed raising the age. According to the chairman of the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions, Josef Středula, it is more positive than the original proposal. “But we want a ceiling of 65 years, because the government does not take into account the length of working time, when a Czech employee has worked almost ten years more than a German employee in his lifetime. And the problem of the pension system would be different if wages were higher. This cannot be solved just by raising the retirement age,” he stated.
Alena Schillerová, head of the parliamentary club of the ANO movement, is not satisfied either. “Neither option works with healthy life expectancy, which is key,” she said.
The government coalition wants to change this with the help of an amendment to the reform, which will probably be discussed by the House in the second reading at the end of September.
