Israeli youth stand in line to board a flight to Tel Aviv at Jorge Chavez International Airport in Lima, Peru, on the 10th (local time). 2023.10.10 EPA Yonhap News Israel, which has been fighting with the Palestinian armed faction Hamas for five days, is accelerating the mobilization of reserve forces by introducing additional flights, Reuters reported on the 10th (local time).
According to reports, Israeli airline Israel Air will provide return flights to Israel from Larnaca in Cyprus, Corfu in Greece, and Batumi in Georgia.
Israel’s national airline El Al added a flight departing from Athens, Greece, and Arcea Airlines also decided to provide a return flight from Marrakech, Morocco to the Israeli capital, Tel Aviv.
Earlier on the 9th, Israel announced that it had called up a total of 300,000 reserve forces. In addition, due to measures such as the allocation of additional flights, the number of reserve forces mobilized so far has increased to approximately 360,000.
This corresponds to about 4% of Israel’s population (approximately 9.2 million people) and is the largest mobilization of reserve forces in Israel in 50 years.
When the fourth Middle East war, known as the ‘Yom Kippur War’, broke out on October 6, 1973, Israel called up about 400,000 reserve troops. On this day, the Day of Atonement, one of the major Jewish holidays, the Egyptian and Syrian armies invaded Israel, which was defenseless, and a war continued for 19 days.
According to the Washington Post (WP), experts believe that it would be impossible for other countries to call up reserve forces as quickly as in the Israeli case.
However, it is reported that public opinion among the Israeli public regarding this mobilization order is mixed.
Tal Casuto, who lives in the UK, said his 23-year-old sister in Tel Aviv had been mobilized and said it was a “scary thought” for him to join the army.
Dan, who was mobilized from his job as a supply chain consultant, confessed that it was “very difficult” to say goodbye to his two children, aged 3 and 9 months.
On the other hand, there are also cases where people happily respond to the mobilization order.
Yehuda Brownstein (24), an Israeli-American living in Los Angeles, boarded a plane to Tel Aviv to voluntarily enlist even though he had not been notified of being called up to the reserve forces.
“There was a sense of solidarity among everyone on board, of coming together for the same cause,” Brownstein explained.
