The government prepares measures to solve problems in purchasing insurance

The problem for the purchase of Compulsory Insurance against Road Accidents (SOAT) is already drawing to a close. Everything indicates that the national government is finalizing the details of the measures that will come into force so that Colombians can have this policy, which covers the death and personal injury suffered by people, whether they are occupants or third non-occupiers, in the use of a vehicle.

The commitment of the Petro administration, in coordination with the Financial Superintendence of Colombia, is that the acquisition of the insurance is carried out through virtual channels, where this procedure could be enabled, through the web portals of the insurance companies and which are authorized to issue this document, in accordance with the provisions of article 2 of the Highway Code or by Law 769 of 2002.

In this sense, the provisions that are being developed are aimed at ensuring that the insurance companies, which are 11 in total, implement and enable the channels present on their web pages, so that the citizen interested in subscribing to the SOAT can do so directly, without having to contact to intermediaries.

The companies authorized to issue this risk policy are: Allianz Seguros SA, AXA Colpatria Seguros SA, Compañía Mundial de Seguros SA, Seguros Generales Suramericana SA, La Previsora SA Compañía de Seguros, Mapfre Seguros Generales de Colombia SA, Seguros Comerciales Bolívar SA , Seguros del Estado SA, Liberty Seguros SA, La Equidad Seguros Generales and Aseguradora Solidaria de Colombia Ltda.

According to data from the Federation of Colombian Insurers-Fasecolda, approximately 810,000 Soats were issued in the first seven months of the year. And that until September the companies would have issued policies for a value of over 2 trillion pesos, a figure that marks an increase of 17.2% compared to the same period of 2021.

And while the new measures to facilitate the purchase of Soat are expected to materialize, the Colombian Federation of Road Haulage Carriers (Colfecar) reported that the Ministry of Transport, and through the Superfinancier, will disclose the new value that will be safe for the month of December.

“We need to make it clear that this insurance will not increase, but rather decrease. But this must be a commitment of everyone, of taxi drivers, of motorcyclists, of everyone, that we must work so that Soat is paid and that we can attack evasions, scams and accidents”, said Guillermo Reyes, Minister of Transport, during his participation at the National Congress of Transit, Transport and Mobility Territorial Bodies.

The Soat prices for this year, published by the Financial Superintendence of Colombia, have been established taking into account the current statutory minimum monthly wage, the 52% contribution to the resource administrator of the General Social Security System in Health (Adres) and of the rate of the Single National Transit Register, RUNT, defined by the Ministry of Transport.

According to the decree issued on November 26 last year with the law 2161, motorists who have behaved well on the public road will be able to access a 10% discount on the value of the Soat premium during 2022. The prices that will be managed are as follows:
