The Government of Senegal Denies Reports of Disappearance at Sea of Senegalese Migrants

The government of Senegal finally reacted to information on the disappearance at sea of 300 Senegalese, 86 of whom were saved yesterday Monday by the Spanish Navy. And it is to deny the said information relayed by the national and international press.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad (MAESE) learned with astonishment, the publication, on social networks, of information reporting the disappearance at sea of at least three hundred (300) Senegalese , candidates for emigration, whose boats from Kafountine (Casamance) were heading for the Canary Islands. It appears from the checks that have been made that this information is completely unfounded,” reads the document published on Tuesday evening by the services of the department headed by Aissata Tall Sall.

However, the said ministry admits that hundreds of Senegalese have been rescued on the Moroccan coast in recent weeks. “Moreover, the MAESE would like to point out that between June 28 and July 9, 2023, two hundred and sixty (260) Senegalese in distress were rescued in Moroccan territorial waters. The Consulate General of Senegal in the Moroccan city of Dakhla in conjunction with the competent Moroccan authorities has made the necessary arrangements for their care and repatriation as soon as possible.
