Quito, Jan 23 (EFE).- The Government of Ecuador announced this Monday that it is seeking a type of vaccine on the international market to combat the outbreak of avian flu, which since last November has infected various farms and even a girl who had had contact with sick animals.

Ecuadorian authorities have discussed with representatives of several international commercial houses the type of vaccine suitable to immunize poultry that are exposed to the disease caused by the AH5N1 virus, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock reported in a statement.

Specialists from the National Poultry Farming Commission have analyzed which vaccine would be adequate to immunize birds against the virus strain detected in the country, as well as the availability of the number of doses that international commercial houses can provide.

The study will make it possible to develop the regulatory framework for protocols, procedures, registration, importation, custody and regulation of the use of the vaccine, added the source.

The technicians seek that the protocols determined for the use of the vaccine comply with the recommendations of the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA).

Although vaccination helps the symptoms of the disease to be milder in the affected farms and decreases the mortality rate from 80 to 40%, approximately, the use of these doses does not completely prevent the spread of birds on the farms. , clarified the source.

The study was prepared by a technical subcommittee of the Ministry’s National Poultry Farming Commission, in which the National Poultry Farmers Corporation, the Egg Producers Union, the Association of Veterinarians, specialists from the Central (State) and San Francisco de Quito, and the Phytosanitary Regulation and Control Agency (Agrocalidad).

According to the World Organization for Animal Health, avian influenza is present in several countries in Asia, Africa, Europe and America, and in the latter continent cases have been reported in Canada, the United States, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Ecuador. EFE
