The government is allocating six million euros for the production of new feature films and series

Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday, February 1, supported the proposal of the Ministry of Culture (KM) for 5.1 million euros European Union (EU) funding and the allocation of 900,000 euros from the state budget to the Latvian film industry to make it easier for those working in the sector to overcome the negative consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic. For the obtained six million euros, it will be possible to shoot 6-8 new Latvian feature films and series.

The Ministry of Culture informed Delfi that in order to implement the program, National Cinema Center (NCC) will implement project selection – will establish an expert council and will select project cooperation partners – film producers, who will be able to produce 6-8 films and series within the project.

The NCC expert council will assess the artistic and professional quality of the projects, and will monitor the selection and implementation of projects. Ministry of Finance subordinate body – the Central Finance and Contracts Agency (CFLA).

NCC plans to announce project applications by February 7. The new series and films will have to be shot by the end of 2023.

“An important role was also given to the production of national cinema in the Latvian National Centennial Program. Many new films are being made, thus promoting both employment and the targeted use of professional skills. “As the emergency situation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the measures related to the control of its spread in Latvia, as elsewhere in the world, have significantly affected the cultural and creative industries, where the activities of creative persons and organizations have been completely suspended, the EU program REACT- EU “funding to support the cultural and creative industries in coping with and after the crisis,” the ministry said.

The support will be implemented in three directions. The first provides support for professional non-governmental organizations in the cultural sector; the second – ensuring the availability of versatile professional art in development centers of national or regional significance in Latvia; thirdly, support for companies in the film industry, promoting their professional capacity and growth.

The conditions of support for each of the directions are planned to be developed in the form of separate regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers.
