The vaccine has become the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel. While there are still concerns about possible outbreaks and the appearance of variants, there is already 8.8 million immunized Spaniards completely (17.7 million at least with one dose) and the Government hopes to reach this week the 10 million protected against COVID-19.
In the words of the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, the vaccination campaign “it goes like a shot” and the “cruising speed” how much his predecessor predicted, Salvador Illa. This week our country will receive 4.6 million doses, a record in receptions that will give a new boost to immunization.
The Government aspires to reach the third milestone in the vaccination schedule that Sánchez announced in early April, almost two months ago. First, the vaccinated exceeded the detected cases of COVID-19 and, later, the country reached the five million immunized.
This was only four weeks ago. That is, in a month the vaccination of five million Spaniards, the same amount as between December 28, 2020 and May 3 of this year.
Right now there 21.9% of the population to be vaccinated (over 16 years) fully immunized, two out of ten Spanish people. The percentage rises to 44.1% if we refer to those who have received at least one puncture. On average, this week some 400,000 doses have been inoculated and, between Monday and Thursday – when there is a daily record – 1.6 million vaccines have been given.
As announced by Darias, this Wednesday they will receive 1.3 million AstraZeneca vaccines, which will be added to the 900,000 reserved by the autonomous communities. Also 2.4 million Pfizer sera. The rest will be Modern and Janssen -monodosis-.
Sánchez’s calendar: 33 million in August
Sánchez announced the calendar of vaccination milestones shortly before the stop with AstraZeneca due to thrombotic events and to decide do not vaccinate those under 60 with that company’s serum. However, despite the initial delay, for now Spain is complying with the Government’s marks.
In June it will be when the mass vaccination of the under 50 years and there are already communities that provide immunization for the population over 40 years of age. Communities like The Canary Islands have already launched the summons for all their citizens, without age limit.
Thus, if everything remains the same, in the week of June 14 our country will reach the 15 million vaccinated with complete guideline: that is, five million more in two weeks.
The next goal will be to reach the 25 million in the week of July 19 and, by the end of August, the 33 million of vaccinated Spaniards. And there will come the longed for 70% of the vaccinated population and a possible return to normality.
