The government classifies monkey pox as a general dangerous disease, WHO in crisis meeting – Aftonbladet

The Swedish government has decided to classify the unusual disease smallpox as a general dangerous disease. This is confirmed by Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren on Friday, Aftonbladet reports.

According to Hallengren, the decision was made at the request of the Public Health Agency.

“The classification gives access to take infection control measures aimed at preventing further spread,” said the Minister of Social Affairs.

At the same time, the World Health Organization WHO has called for an extra crisis meeting on the spread of smallpox. These have been discovered in the US and in several places in Europe, including a first confirmed case in Sweden on Thursday.

Monkey pox usually causes fever, swollen lymph nodes, general malaise and skin rash with blisters. The new variant of the disease is believed to be transmitted through sexual contact.
