We all know the Goodyear company, one of the leading manufacturers of car tires. He has a big goal for 2023: to be able to market a tire made with 70% sustainable materials, an ambitious goal.
Goodyear also presented a new tire concept made with 90% low environmental impact materials and approved for road use. The road to 100% sustainable slowly takes shape. Let’s see what’s new.
The first tire with a very low environmental impact
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (over 120 years of history) is proud to present the first concept tire made with 90% materials with a lower environmental impact. This product, currently on demonstration, has passed US Department of Transportation testing and is approved for street use.
The new tires have lower rolling resistance than traditional tires. Excellent results, which allow Goodyear’s new concept tire to deliver improved fuel economy and reduced emissions.
Goodyear’s sustainable journey
This new Goodyear rubber made from 90% environmentally friendly materials comes just one year after the company announced the creation of another concept tire – which in 2022 stood at 70% sustainable materials.
During this year the company will start the production of this tyre, which will be tested by some partner suppliers of the American company. The introduction on the market of the new product, created thanks to 90% materials with a lower environmental impact, is an important step for the development of the mobility of the future. Goodyear (which over the years has offered extraordinary car tire concepts never seen before) is studying the procurement process of these materials to produce the tire on a large scale.
In fact, as Chris Helsel, Senior Vice President, Global Operations and Chief Technology Officer of Goodyear said: “Goodyear’s sustainability journey continues. Our goal is to introduce the first 100% sustainable tire by 2030. Last year was a crucial year for the development of this project. We have studied new technologies, identified new partnerships to accelerate the process of not only making a tire with 90% low environmental impact materials, but also producing a limited series tire made with 70% sustainable materials. Our Research and Development team continues to create innovative projects to build a better future”.
The new demonstration tire with 90% environmentally friendly materials is made with a total of 17 ingredients in 12 different componentsincluding:
- carbon blackincluded to strengthen the compound and increase its life, it is traditionally made by burning various types of petroleum-derived products;
- soybean oilhelps keep the compound flexible to changes in temperature;
- silicaingredient often used in tires to improve grip and reduce fuel consumption;
- polyesterrecycled from used bottles, turning polyester into basic chemicals and reforming them into engineering polyester used for tire cords;
- resinsthey help to improve and enhance the traction performance of the tyres;
- bead wire and steel cords: they reinforce the structure of the tyre. These materials come from recycled steel produced using the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) process, which reduces energy consumption while including a higher recycled content;
- polymers ISCC certificates, for the mass balance of bio and biocircular raw materials.
