The good times are over! An anticyclone brings cold, storms and snow

By the end of the week, temperatures in our country will be higher than usual for the first half of December. It will be cloudy and foggy weather will prevail in the lowlands until Saturday, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology reported.

In the western part of the Upper Thrace plain and along the Danube River the fog will be persistent and in some places will lift. There will be temporary cloud breaks over mountainous regions and Friday, December 9 in multiple locations across the country. The minimum prevailing temperatures will be between 3 and 8 degrees, and the maximum between 9 and 14 degrees.

During the weekends, with the strengthening of the sirocco, especially in eastern Bulgaria and the Pre-Balkans, daytime temperatures will rise and in some places reach 16-18 degrees. Minimum temperatures are also on the rise: Sunday 11 December in many areas they will be above 10 degrees. On Saturday, December 10, the probability of rain increases in the western half of the country.

On Sunday 11 December and Monday 12 December a Mediterranean cyclone and its cold atmospheric front will cross the country. On Sunday in many places, especially in western and central Bulgaria, there will be precipitation, significant in the Rilo-Rhodope region, where thunderstorms are also possible.

Early next week there will be a sharp change in the weather.

The influx of cold air will begin on Monday with a north-westerly wind; in the western half of the country temperatures will drop significantly, while in eastern Bulgaria a strong southerly wind will continue to blow and it will still be hot there, with highs above 15 degrees. As it cools down, the rain in the Pre-Balkans and on the high fields will turn into snow. Sleet is also possible along the passing weather front line.

In the evening of Monday and in the night of Tuesday 13 December, cold air will also cover eastern Bulgaria, and temperatures will drop there. Tuesday will be windy and mostly cloudy, in many places, especially in the eastern half of the country with precipitation: mostly snow, in the southeastern regions – rain and snow. In northeastern Bulgaria, there will be an increased chance of blizzards and winds.
