Zar Amír Ebrahímí, originally from Iran, won the Best Actor Award for her role in Holy Spider (Les Nuits de Mashhad). She played a journalist in a real-life film about a multiple killer who targets sex workers in the Iranian city of Mashhad. The actress has lived in France since 2008, thanking the country for accepting the award, AFP said.

According to the jury, the best acting performance in the main role was given by Song Kang-ho from South Korea in the film Beurokeo (Broker) about a family who is trying to find a new home for an abandoned child. The 55-year-old actor also starred in The Parasite, which won the Palme d’Or three years ago.

A total of 21 films competed for the main prize in Cannes this year. The winners were decided by a jury chaired by French actor Vincent Lindon.

The Czech Republic was not represented in the main competition this year. Věra Chytilová’s Daisies was presented in a digitally restored form in the Cannes Classics section.
