Spotify has changed the music industry. In general, the Internet and streaming platforms have left physical discs in the background, but the Swedish company has been the one that has led that change. Its appearance in 2008 with its proposal of being able to listen to music on the Internet without having to download it was a revolution. And now the biggest musical artists of the moment have millions of followers in this application: Taylor Swift, Bud Bunny, Ed Sheeran or The Weeknd are usually in all the rankings of the most listened to singers. But, which are the most listened to Malaga artists?

If we transfer that ‘ranking’ to the province of Málaga, there are some surprises. What names come to mind? The melodic Pablo Alborán or Pablo López? The classic groups like Danza Invisible or Chambao? The pull of El Kanka or Vanesa Martín? Well, that’s where the shots go, but with nuances. Because Pablo Alborán is the undisputed number one among Malaga residents, although there are not so well-known names that accumulate hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners. The more urban fashion styles (rap and trap) and their connection with the younger generations mean that some classics of Malaga music stay a little lower on this list of the most played on Spotify. If we review the statistics that the application itself offers for each artist (checked this week in October), this would be the ‘top 10’ of the artists in Malaga with the most monthly listeners.

  1. 728,000 monthly listeners

    Pablo Lopez

Their latest concerts have been in Miami, New York or Los Angeles, which shows the growth of Pablo Lopez. The Fuengirola native celebrated his ten years in music in 2024 with a tour that is making him fill theaters wherever he goes. In addition to the audience that follows him from venue to venue, López has a wide legion of unconditional fans on Spotify: 728,000 monthly listeners. The musician and composer received a boost after his time in Operación Triunfo in 2008 and from there he has managed to build a solid professional career: four studio albums, collaborations with international artists and dozens of awards and nominations. He has also become even more popular for his work as a coach on the television program La Voz and is the author of the Unicaja basketball anthem. This year he had the privilege of singing the Andalusian anthem in a very emotional performance.

  1. 790,000 monthly listeners

    Foyone

Ñito Salas

The first rapper on this list of Malaga artists is Foyonea classic on the national scene despite the fact that he is only 33 years old. Very popular for his series of songs Rap Sin Corte, the man from Malaga from Portada Alta has collaborated with the most important rappers in Spain. He has seven studio albums published, the last of them in 2024 titled ‘Demoni’, a groundbreaking and experimental work that does not leave anyone indifferent. It accumulates more than 790,000 monthly listeners.

  1. 872,000 monthly listeners

    Samuel Baby

Marilu Baez

One of the youngest on the list, Samuel Baby At 19 years old, he already has 872,000 monthly listeners on Spotify. Gypsy and from the La Palmilla neighborhood, in 2023 he released his first album, titled ‘Samueliayo’. Much earlier, when he was only 12 years old, he managed to make one of his songs ‘Wannan Vivir’ go viral. He is part of the musical movement ‘Afrochuliando’ and the song ‘Japoni’, in which he collaborates with Samuel G., Oscar El Ruso (also from Malaga) and with Omar Montes, has allowed him to win a platinum record and accumulate millions of listens.

Marilu Baez

Like Samueliyo and Óscar El Ruso, Samuel G. He makes music from the studio set up in his home in La Palmilla. And that is allowing it to reach 905,000 Spotify listeners every month. Also a collaborator on the song ‘Japoni’, ‘Whisky’ and ‘Mi Cachuli’ are two of the most recent songs with which they are triumphing. Spotify gives him 905,000 monthly listeners, but as in the case of his colleagues, it is the song ‘Japoni’ that gives him the majority of these listens.

Hugo Cortes

One of the few people from Malaga who has exceeded one million monthly listeners on the platform. Kanka is a singer-songwriter and composer and in his music there is rumba, blues, reggae, pop… but above all, very good vibes. After a sabbatical year, in 2023 he returned with a new album ‘Cosas de los vivos’, his sixth studio album. Kanka has managed to cross the border of our country and its lyrics resonate in Argentina, Chile or Colombia, where many of its listens come from on Spotify. His most listened to song on the platform is ‘Canela en rama’. Furthermore, this year he gave the opening speech at the Malaga Fair.

  1. 1.2 million

    Oscar the Russian

The third leg of that urban music movement that triumphs from La Palmilla. Born in 2004, Óscar Durán Santiago, known as Oscar the Russian (he has light eyes and was very blonde as a child), has more than a million monthly listeners on the streaming platform. Based on ‘singles’ that go viral and are played from cell phone to cell phone among young people, Óscar is determined to establish himself as one of the great promises of Spanish urban music. He dreams of collaborating with Bad Bunny, one of his references

Daniel Martínez De la Ossa Romero (1993) became interested in the world of rap from a very young age from his neighborhood of El Palo. He began his career first as Soup, and later called himself Delaossa, a name under which he has signed five solo albums. Year after year he has managed to expand his fan base and reach a much wider audience. Rap, urban sounds, like music that also reaches the masses, perhaps what rock stars did at the time. So much so that it borders on the barrier of two million monthly listeners, although last week it easily surpassed them, an outrage. His song ‘Veneno’, from his work ‘La Tour Liffee’is the one that has the most reproductions.

  1. 2.4 million monthly listeners

    Vanesa Martin

EFE

His two decades of career make him Vanesa Martin She is one of the best-known Spanish singers and has the most fans. 2.4 million Spotify users enjoy their songs every month. Curiously, her most listened to song on the platform is ‘And if it were her?’, a version of Alejandro Sanz’s song in which Pablo Alborán, Malú and David Bisbal participate. His pull in Spain is undoubted, but many of his listeners come from Chile, Mexico or Argentina. The Malaga native published ‘Placeres y Sins’ two years ago and is already fully involved in the creation of her next album, her ninth studio album, which she will publish after signing with Universal Music this summer, after her time at EMI first and then at Warner.

  1. 7.2 million monthly listeners

    Ana Mena

Ana Mena is one of the great Latin-speaking pop artists of the moment. The young woman from Estepona, who in addition to being a singer is an actress and businesswoman, has grown like crazy in recent years, which has allowed her to collaborate with some international stars. ‘Spoti’ has 7.2 million monthly listeners. His song ‘Las 12’a collaboration with the Mexican Belinda, has been played in all the clubs in the last two years (“Like you and me, if no one can do it like you and me, that no one like you knows me, I don’t know who I’ll call when they arrive 12?”) and in his most listened song on the streaming platform

  1. 13.7 million monthly listeners

    Pablo Alboran

The big winner on the list is Pablo Alboran. The singer from Malaga has been one of the great pop artists in Spain for years and his numbers support him. With 13.7 million monthly listeners, he only has the same listeners on the application as the rest of the ‘top 10’. The man from Malaga is among the most listened to Spaniards in the world, along with artists such as Alejandro Sanz, Rosalía or Enrique Iglesias and has also been the best seller in Spain in seven non-consecutive years (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2018 , 2020). Alborán has had a few months of disconnection and is now working on his new music.

Other Malaga classics: Danza Invisible, Chambao, Pasión Vega…

In addition to the ‘top ten’, there are several classics of Malaga music that accumulate hundreds of thousands of monthly listeners on ‘spotify’. There they are Butterfly Effectwith 687,000 monthly listeners, very close to those top positions. Or the Danza Invisiblesurely the most important pop rock group in the province, with its 480,000 monthly listeners, many of them for their classic ‘Sabor de Amor’. It doesn’t go out of style either Chambaowith 362,000 monthly listeners, a project that began with chill flamenco more than 20 years ago and that La Mari revived in 2023 with ‘En la crest del Ahora’. Among the soloists, the torrent of voice and the art of Diana Navarro they reach 583,000 monthly listeners and the Spanish song, the copla and the boleros of Passion Vega (from Madrid by birth, but from Malaga at heart) bring together more than 280,000 monthly listeners. Fran Pereawho in 2023 released ‘Uno más uno son 20’, an album of collaborations, reaches 316,000 listeners every month and the ‘indie’ of Anni B Sweet It is also at 332,000 listens per month. A couple of curiosities: Antonio Banderas He has a profile on Spotify with almost a million monthly listeners (981,000 per month), many of them for his legendary ‘Canción del Mariachi’, which he recorded with Los Lobos for the film ‘Desperado’. We did not include him in the list because he is not specifically a singer, although the actor from Malaga has already demonstrated his good voice many times. And watch out for Malaga-based Illojuan and SpokSponha (the first very famous streamer, the second much more linked to the rap scene), who are going to skyrocket in the coming weeks with the publication of their ‘Hotel Maligno’
