Sunday’s announcement of the film Golden Globes was a dull three-hour evening with mostly expected winners and minimal surprises. The helplessness of the show could have caught up with many viewers and switched to another channel.
According to Variety magazine, part of the blame falls on production. It was known in advance that presenters Tina Fey and Ammy Poehler would each speak from the opposite end of the United States, and yet they appeared on a strangely divided screen that wanted to give the false impression of a joint performance.
Due to Covid-19, everyone was at home at their computers and responded to the awards. Somewhere, the director didn’t even make the technical connection – Daniel Kaluuya, who was awarded the supporting role for his performance in Judas and the Black Messiah, thanked him for a moment without his voice.
American critics pointed to the shortcomings in managing the connection with the help of Zoom and to the fact that the production of the Golden Globes did not bother to learn from the organizers of the Emmy Awards, where last year the technical problems of connecting participants were solved well.
I also did not like the decision to keep all nominees from one category on one screen. While the winner thanked, the “losers” were forced to smile at the screens and clap.
Loud-type background noise, for example, thanks to Catherine O’Hara’s winner of the Best Actress award in a television comedy, was a bigger event than the content itself. That was certainly not the intention – who would want to create a catastrophe on purpose? But in a sense, it had an effect. The evening itself had little to say and was more of a mess of sounds than anything.
The small weight of the Golden Globes, decided by the Association of Foreign Journalists (HFPA), has always been a problem for this award, although it is described as an indicator of future Oscars. Covidem-19 said that the evening must be held remotely, but according to critics, nothing explains why it was organized at a distance from common sense.
It was an evening with a sour taste and a sense of responsibility for those involved. It took place because everyone knows it takes place every year. After three hours, the spectators got up feeling that the guessed work meeting with unpleasant colleagues had ended. What if they say they don’t need anything like that?
A few bright moments
The news server Vox summed up the matter under the headline Golden Globes 2021 showed that we no longer need Golden Globes. The awarding of these prizes is traditionally a strange affair, but this year’s event still surpassed the previous ones.
Only the performances of Taylor Simone Ledward, who tried to express in emotional words what her late husband Chadwick Boseman, awarded in the category of the best actor, would say about his prize, can be added to the brighter moments.
Or Jane Fonda, awarded for her contribution to the film. “We in this industry do not want to hear everything about ourselves, we do not want to know what voices we respect, what we raise, which we silence. We do not want to talk about who we let sit at the table and whom we leave behind the decision-making door. groups, which decide who will be accepted, what will be filmed and who will receive the prize, let’s expand the shelter so that everyone can stand up and so that the stories of everyone can be seen and heard, “said Fondová.
Apart from her, however, none of the winners used the speech of thanks for anything more general than to thank colleagues and creators. The Golden Globes award may be thrown in the trash and replaced with something better. But it has its traditional audience and a bulletproof contract with NBC television, which has the right to broadcast for the evening. But if any of the evenings could devalue the prize, it was Sunday. The golden globes of 2021 were terrible and it may be time to come up with something new, says the irreconcilable Vox.
