The Goldbergs series finale aired on Wednesday, and it was nothing short of epic. Titled “Bev to the Future,” the Back to the Future-themed episode saw Beverly reconnecting with her former flame George (played by Rob Corddry) at her high school reunion. This set off a chain of events that left Adam feeling upset about his mom moving on from his dad. However, after a heart-to-heart, Adam comes around and even invites George to his daughter’s first birthday. Alongside these heart-warming relationship developments, viewers were treated to Barry and Joanne eloping in a bid to prove their commitment to each other.
If you’re concerned that the episode gave too much closure and closed the door on future seasons, then you’ll be relieved to know that the finale wasn’t originally intended to be the show’s swan song. According to co-showrunner/exec producer Alex Barnow, “We weren’t quite positive it was going to be our [series] finale when we wrote the final episode of the season […] had we known it was really the final episode, we would have done a more full-bodied tribute to the show.”
While the cast didn’t know the series was coming to an end until after they had already filmed their final scenes, they agree that it was for the best. The delayed news allowed them to celebrate their time on the show and take pictures of the set before saying goodbye.
Looking to the future, Barnow shares that if there had been a season 11, they would have explored a permanent relationship for Beverly and George. “We felt like this was a really nice way to end it, with the possibility of romance […] and her kids could leave home and feel good that their mom was in a happy relationship,” Barnow explains. However, there were some parts of the show’s ’80s aesthetic that the cast is happy to leave behind, with Wendi McLendon-Covey (who played Beverly) revealing, “All of it! I’ve lived through the ’80s twice now! I don’t need to go back ever again.”
