MTI wrote that Péter Szappanos, one of the goalkeepers of the Hungarian national team, will continue his career in al-Fateh, a member of the Saudi Arabian football league.

Regarding the departure of the 33-year-old goalkeeper, his former club, Paks statement on their website on Friday. Sappnos in his farewell message he wrote that: “First of all, I would like to thank the club for the opportunity to sign me a year ago, in a difficult situation. I would like to say that I made the best decision last summer to come to Paks, luckily this was reflected in the results, we were able to write club history.

(…) I had an opportunity that I believe I had to take. I’ve been working since I was young so that one day I could qualify overseas, and I don’t think I need to know what kind of opponents I can play against . I support the team from the bottom of my heart to reach the group stage of the Conference League, and I think there is a high percentage of that chance. The team, the managers, and of course the fans, as well as the whole city, would deserve it.”

Szappanos won the Hungarian Cup and the tournament silver medal with Paks last season, and was a member of the Hungarian national team’s European Championship squad. In the last few days, he underwent medical examinations at his new club, where everything was found to be fine, so the contract was signed. Due to a change of club, Szappanos did not travel to the Paks Conference League holder in the Czech Republic, thus against Mladá Boleslav, In a game that ended in a 2-2 draw 20-year-old Simon Barnabás saved the Hungarian team’s goal.

Péter Szappanos started his professional career in MTK Dunaharaszti, from 2014 he played for four years in Zalaegerszeg, then from 2018 to 2021 he played in Mezőkövesden. From there, he moved to Budapest Honvéd and joined Paks last summer from Kispest. He has appeared in the Hungarian national team once so far, in November 2022 in a friendly match against the Greeks was replaced.
