Due to the pandemic, the global tourism industry could lose two trillion dollars this year
Madrid, Nov. 29, LETA – AFP. The global tourism industry will lose two trillion US dollars (1.78 trillion euros) in revenue this year due to the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (WTO) forecast on Monday.
The number of international tourists this year will remain 70% -75% below the 1.5 billion level recorded before the 2019 pandemic. There was a similar decline last year, according to the WTO.
The organization says the global tourism industry lost two trillion dollars in revenue last year, making it one of the sectors hardest hit by the pandemic.
Although the WTO does not currently have a forecast for next year, the medium-term outlook does not appear favorable.
“Despite recent improvements, uneven global vaccination coverage and new strains of Covid-19 could have a negative impact on the already slow and fragile recovery,” the WTO said.
According to the organization, a total of 46 countries, or 21% of all destinations in the world, have now completely closed their borders to tourists.
