the global number of cases has exceeded 10 million

Published on : Modified :

More than 10 million cases of Covid-19 have now been identified worldwide, according to a count by Reuters, while the total number of deaths caused by the new coronavirus is close to 500,000.

The Covid-19 has made more than 495,000 deaths worldwide, for nearly 10 million confirmed cases, according to a count made Sunday June 28 by Reuters. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this figure of 10 million represents approximately twice the number of serious influenza cases registered each year worldwide. At this point, WHO continues, the Covid-19 epidemic has killed as much as the flu does in a year.

The symbolic bar of 10 million cases is crossed at a time when many countries, especially in Europe, continue their gradual exit from the containment measures taken between March and May to contain the virus.

But, pending the development of a possible vaccine, measures of social distancing and health prudence continue to be encouraged in those countries which have been the hardest hit by the disease.

This is all the more true since some countries report new sources of infection, leading, for example in Germany, to localized “reconfinement” measures so as not to suffer a second wave, considered likely by many scientific experts, of greater magnitude.

Brazil counts more than 1 000 deaths in 24 hours

With more than 2.5 million cases and more than 125,000 deaths caused by Covid-19, the United States are by far the most affected by the disease, alone representing a quarter of the total in the two counts, while the country, with some 331 million inhabitants, accounts for just over 4% of the world population.

Although the epidemic appeared to be under control in May, it rebounded sharply, affecting mostly southern and western states. On Friday, the United States reported 45,242 new confirmed cases, the highest daily increase since the onset of the disease.

North America, Latin America and Europe each represent around 25% of the cases, while Asia weighs 11% and the Middle East 9%.

Besides the United States again, now raging in brazil, which reported 1,109 deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of virus-related deaths to 57,070, the health ministry reported on Saturday.

The number of confirmed cases of coronavirus increased by 38,693, more than 8,000 less than the previous day, for a total of 1,313,667 cases, added the ministry.
