The Global Impact of Loneliness: WHO’s International Commission and Health Risks

WHO has created an international commission on loneliness. The organization noted that the problem of loneliness has worsened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has stopped people’s social activity, so the level of loneliness has increased.

“Anyone, anywhere can be lonely or socially isolated,” the organization explained.

“Loneliness knows no age or boundaries and is becoming a global public health problem, affecting all aspects of health, well-being and development,” the World Health Organization added.

The organization explained that the risks to human health from loneliness equal to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. The damage from loneliness was even greater than from obesity or a sedentary lifestyle.

According to WHO, one in four older people in the world experiences social isolation, which carries a 50% risk of dementia and a 30% risk of coronary disease or stroke.

Moreover, according to research before 15% of teenagers in the world are lonely. Young people who felt lonely at school were more likely to drop out of university. And feeling disconnected and unsupported at work can lead to decreased productivity.
