The district court sentenced the rapist who preyed on underage girls on Snapchat to almost nine years in prison.

Nipuna Dilshan Kumarasiri Kuda Vidanage32, was sentenced to a long prison term for raping underage girls. The youngest of the victims was only 12 years old at the time of the events.
The man had met his victims on the messaging service Snapchat. His modus operandi was largely the same for all three victims: the man sent unknown girls a friend request on Snapchat and started communicating.
The conversation soon turned sexual. Kuda Vidanage, who appeared under a pseudonym and spoke English, asked the girls for sensitive footage and suggested a meeting. During the meetings, he raped the girls.
The crimes took place in the capital region in the summer of 2023 and the beginning of 2024.
“Big misunderstanding”
The 12-year-old victim was offered compensation for intercourse by Kuda Vidanage. The girl, who still attended elementary school, felt that she needed money, so she agreed. When the girl told her age, the man replied: “Uuuuuu”.
Kuda Vidanage was waiting for the girl in the Kivistö train station parking lot. He guided the child to his car and told him to get low in the back seat. In the car, he raped the child in different ways. Then he gave the girl 20 euros and three cigarettes.
A couple of weeks later, Kuda Vidanage proposed another meeting, again for compensation.
They went to the apartment of a family with children in Helsinki, which the man claimed belonged to his brother. It was a lie. It was about the man’s ex-spouse’s apartment, where he lived with their children together. The man had the keys there.
In the apartment, Kuda Vidanage raped the child again and gave her 30 euros and a pack of cigarettes. Even after this meeting, Kuda Vidanage tried to contact the girl. The girl did not agree, but blocked the “disgusting” man’s contacts.
Kuda Vidanage denied having committed the crime, let alone knowing the girl. He claimed to the police that it was a “big misunderstanding”. Someone else may have used his lost phone to communicate with the girl.

Another victim of Kuda Vidanage was a 17-year-old girl.
The man picked up the girl at his ex-husband’s apartment, got her drunk and raped her.
The crying girl asked the man to stop and take her back to her friend in another city. He was in the so-called “hatka”, i.e. he left his foster care place without permission.
The police found the girl the evening after the rape. The police asked the girl where she was during the fight and how she was doing. The girl told. At that time, he himself did not understand that the man had acted wrongly and illegally.
The male police officer suspected that the girl had been the victim of a sexual crime. The social welfare workers immediately took the girl to serial examinations.
Kuda Vidanage again maintained his innocence. He claimed he only chatted with the girl on Snapchat, but denied ever meeting her.
He claimed that the girl and her friends have filed a baseless criminal complaint, as if in revenge and to get money.
“This guy can’t get away”
The third victim was also 17 years old. Kuda Vidanage also got to know him on Snapchat.
The man asked the girl to an apartment in Vantaa, got her drunk and raped her in various ways.
The girl was heavily intoxicated from the drinks mixed by the man. My head was spinning, I was vomiting and I was paralyzed by fear, the girl described later.
When Kuda Vidanage started touching, the girl’s alarm bells went off. He was able to message his friend that he was feeling unsafe.

A concerned friend asked the girl to share her location on Snapchat. The girl shared, but asked that the guy not make a “police case” about it. The girl was afraid that she would get into trouble herself.
A friend called 911, and soon the police were at the door. This time, Kuda Vidanage, who was contacted on the spot, could not deny that he has not met his victim.
Thus, he admitted the sexual intercourse, but denied the rape. He claimed that the sex was consensual and that he thought the girl was of legal age.
However, a third man who was in the apartment testified against the claim. He said that the girl was afraid of the eyes and intoxicated, almost unconscious. In addition, he said that he saw that Kuda Vidanage deleted the Snapchat application from his phone after the police arrived.
Almost 9 years
Serious criminal charges were processed in the district court of Itä-Uusimaa in the summer of 2024. It considered that Kuda Vidanage’s stories are, on the whole, unbelievable.
The girls, on the other hand, had described the course of events consistently and without change, and had also told about things that were unfavorable to them.
The district court of Itä-Uusimaa convicted Nipuna Dilsha Kumarasiri Kuda Vidanage of two counts of aggravated child rape, two counts of aggravated rape and two counts of offering compensation for a sexual act against a young person.
The common punishment for the crimes is a prison sentence of eight years and nine months. In addition, Kuda Vidanage must compensate its victims a total of around 33,000 euros for the suffering caused by the crimes, among other things.
Kuda Vidanage appealed his sentence to the Helsinki Court of Appeal, but withdrew his appeal. Consequently, the district court’s judgment remains in effect.
