The story of 11-year-old Carly Woods from Great Britain is one of the heartbreakers. One morning the girl woke up with a stomach ache that her parents thought was just nausea. Eventually, however, the girl ended up in the hospital, where doctors discovered that she was suffering from a rare form of liver cancer. She was no longer helped, a few days later her parents had to say goodbye to their daughter forever.
He described the story with a tragic ending to an English weekly Liverpool Echo father of eleven-year-old Carly, John Woods. Until recently, partners John and Kelly and their children lived happily in Skelmersdale. But one Sunday morning in October, however, their lives turned upside down.
“On Sunday morning, Carly woke up and said, ‘Dad, my stomach hurts.’ “I thought she was trying to play. But as the day went on, she moaned more and I asked her what she had for breakfast,” John recalls of the fateful day.
“She replied that she wasn’t even hungry. I said she was probably hungry and that I would make her dinner. I made her something to eat, but she didn’t eat much. When it came time to sleep, she whimpered a little, so Kelly gave her “She went back to the bedroom and said Carly probably had appendicitis. I said we’d see how it went in the morning,” John described.
An examination at the hospital revealed an enlarged liver
At five o’clock in the morning, his partner woke him up and told him that Carly would take him to the hospital. There, the girl underwent examinations and tests that ruled out appendicitis. However, doctors found that Carly had an enlarged liver, although they did not yet know the reason. Therefore, they performed further tests, and after four days, the girl was finally taken to Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool.
There, the parents received a devastating message from the doctors. “The ultrasound showed that her liver was four times larger than it should be. She was full of tumors,” John said. But the worse news was yet to come. Further tests showed that the cancer had spread to the lungs. Carly suffered from a rare type of liver cancer.

The doctors told their parents that they would have to start chemotherapy as soon as possible to get rid of Carly’s lung tumors. Only then could she have a liver transplant. First, the girl underwent surgery to prepare her for chemotherapy. However, the doctors had a problem bringing her to life after the operation.
Chemotherapy would not work
In the end, she woke up, but the prognosis worsened significantly. The next day, John and Kelly heard from the doctors that there was nothing they could do for Carly. “Her liver was completely exhausted and not working. She would not be able to do chemotherapy physically, it would be too cruel. They told us we would have to decide whether to keep her alive in such circumstances or let her go,” John recalls.
Carly lived another week, on November 1, three weeks after her stomach ached, she died at Alder Hey Hospital surrounded by her family. The crushed father confided that the only thing that gave them a little comfort at the moment was the fact that the samples taken by his daughter could help other children.
“I hope her story will be read by thousands of people and her victim will potentially save thousands of families from the same pain,” he added. Her relatives also write about Carly’s story on social networks. Her cousin Gary, for example, called for sharing on Facebook. “To help raise awareness about this rare cancer in children,” he wrote.
