A named object 2023 DZ2 it was discovered a month ago. As predicted by scientists, the asteroid passed within 175,000 km of Earth on Saturday (25/3) yesterday after flying past the Moon.
Asteroids are small to medium-sized celestial bodies, consisting of materials such as rock, metal and ice.
Some asteroids are large enough to have their own gravity and form more like small planets than celestial bodies.
Because of their close orbits to Earth, asteroids are often objects of interest to astronomers and researchers studying the origin of the Solar System.
However, asteroids also have potential dangers because of the possibility of colliding with Earth which can cause great damage.
Astronomers say that the asteroid 2023 DZ2 has a diameter of between 40 meters and 90 meters, which is quite rare. In fact, it is called a once in a decade event.
According to NASA, this is an important opportunity for astronomers to add to their knowledge about asteroids, should a potentially dangerous object be found that could hit Earth.
“Indeed there is no possibility that the asteroid will fall to earth. But, because it is close enough, that makes it an interesting object to observe,” said the European Space Agency’s head of planetary defense Richard Moissl.
