In the opening game, players from the North Carolina Courage and Portland Thorns teams knelt during the national anthem and wore T-shirts with the message “Black Lives Matter,” or “Black Lives Matter.” The teams issued a statement explaining that the gesture was in protest at “racial injustice, police brutality and systematic racism.”
