Maribor had a chance to take the lead after Safporov’s dazzling drive up the left, but the opportunity fizzled away as his shot went just over the bar after 15 minutes. The Russians could have taken the lead a minute earlier, the goalkeeper Oblak extinguished his own bad start by jumping under Smolov’s feet, the referee whistled a penalty, but the VAR verdict determined that Rus was in the offside.

19 minutes into the match, Sutormin could have reduced the lead with a blistering strike from the left wing, had it not been for an excellent block by the visitors’ keeper. The Russians stepped up the pace and in the 28th minute, after Fomina’s direct kick, the tracker Divejev opened the score with his head. And in four minutes it was already 2: 0 for the guests, when another stopper Dzikija raised the Russian lead with scissors after a corner kick. The home team did not resign, and in the 40th minute Iličič, after Karničnik’s pass, was passed to Šporar Iličič, who with a shot to the right post overcame Safonova.

In the second half, the Slovenians equalized, but the joy for Kurtič and the home spectators was ruined by VAR, the shooter headed from a close offside. The Russians finally brought the duel to a victorious end and got to the top of the table by two points ahead of the Croats.
