The German U16 national team is European champion

In the final round of the European Summer Cup (5-7 August in Le Touquet), the German team, coached by team captain Björn Simon, demonstrated all of their skills. In three matches, consisting of two singles and one doubles, they only lost one doubles match. The German team also won the final against Portugal with a clear 3-0, crowning themselves European champions:

Niels McDonald vs. Salvador Monteiro – 6:2, 6:3.

Diego Dedura-Palomero vs. Goncalo da Rosa Castro – 6:1, 6:1

Oliver Majdandzic/Niels McDonald vs. Rodrigo Leal/Salvador Monteiro – 5:3, 4:0

The last time a German U16 team won the European Junior Championship was nine years ago. At that time, Marvin Möller, Nicola Kuhn and Maximilian Todorov played for the DTB team.

The journey for Dedura-Palomero, McDonald and Majdandzic began with a home game in Hamburg together with DTB national coach Philipp Petzschner. The qualifying round of the Summer Cup took place on the sidelines of the ATP 500 tournament – in front of partially full stands at the Rothenbaum in Hamburg.

Juniors finish fourth

At the Junior Women’s Summer Cup, from August 5th to 7th in Marienbad, only players from the Porsche junior teams were used for Germany. Julia Stusek, Sonja Zhenikhova and Mariella Thamm, under the leadership of DTB national coach Jasmin Wöhr, narrowly missed the winner’s podium. In the semi-final (against Great Britain) and in the match for third place (against the Czech Republic), the DTB team lost twice in the decisive doubles and came fourth.

Nevertheless, the selection qualified as one of the best five teams for the Junior Billie Jean King Cup.

This is how things continue for the U16 teams

The young players will make their next appearance in the DTB jersey from November 11 to 17. Then the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Billie Jean King Cup will take place in Antalya. The German teams will play against 15 other countries for the most important team title in junior tennis.
