Stefan Schulze-Hausmann: It has recently been called “hybrid” when some people are live on site, but most are guests virtually. That’s exactly how it will be. I will miss the DNP-typical blue carpet very much, it symbolizes our way of dealing with the topic: After a serious and busy year, we wanted to put a glimmer of hope against Corona.
–
Schulze-Hausmann: Yes, we will include Christian Wulff, Sigmar Gabriel and model Toni Garrn, who by the way is an ambassador for fair textiles. And Joy Denalane sings.
–
How do you work in lockdown on this very complex event with congress and evening events?
–
<!–
Schulze-Hausmann: Very intensive and from home offices. In our office in the Gehry buildings in the Medienhafen there is only ever a small occupation, one person per room. I mostly work at home in Niederkassel.
–
How tedious is planning when you can’t really plan anything with certainty?
–
Schulze-Hausmann: The project has changed in stages, we’ve been driving on sight since spring. It was not an easy time for and as for many others. One main problem: It was long unclear to our sponsors and partners what kind of event would be possible at all. Of course you feel hesitant. The chance was that our topic is still, perhaps more than ever, in demand. We used them.
–
Now you have introduced a new price at this inconvenient time. How did that go down?
–
Schulze-Hausmann: Before that we were very worried and are now quite relieved. Hundreds of companies, designers and students have applied for the premiere of the design award. The jury – that’s 40 prominent figures from the design and sustainability scene such as Konstantin Grcic, Stefan Diez, Michael Braungart and Maja Göpel – was able to draw on unlimited resources.
–
How much does your heart bleed when you think about the fact that instead of more than 1,000 you can only greet a handful of guests?
–
Schulze-Hausmann: One struggles enormously, of course also with the measures to contain COVID-19. For us that meant: getting smaller and smaller. From 1200 to 450 people in the hall, then to 250. Now we are taking place completely without an audience – as a TV format. We are converting the Maritim into a large television studio – the large hall and four rooms. We stream the entire event quite elaborately, there are a lot of premieres in it. DNP.TV is the web address. A good 100 speakers will be there – some here in Düsseldorf, many will be added.
–
Schulze-Hausmann: Rather stressed, challenged. The whole thing is an agonizing process, driving on sight, which strains my nerves to the utmost. But there is also positive news: We have long-term partners who are understanding and very constructive. We have rebuilt. The encounters between people will disappear, we will miss them. It will now be more of a network in virtual space, but we will have more reach. This is also a good way to multiply the idea of sustainability.
–
So completely without an audience, isn’t that less stressful? Maybe that’s a relief too?
–
Schulze-Hausmann: Not for me. I stuck to the audience’s idea for longer than my team, and it was very difficult for me to decide in favor of an empty hall and additional award winners. At that moment the event has already changed a lot. I know how television works, it’s different. Corona has us under control, everything is dominant and demands this change. Climate change is not taking a break either, we have to get attention to this issue again. Environment and sustainability have fallen behind.
–
Are You Superstitious? It is the 13th DNP!
–
Schulze-Hausmann: Not until now, but it is so urgent that it makes you think.
–
How was your event in the “darn 7th year”?
–
Schulze-Hausmann: It ran without scratches, the 13th really tears us out of the ordinary. But everything that happens may have reasons. Perhaps it is time to rethink our formats even more fundamentally and to change things.
–
How are you personally with Corona?
–
Schulze-Hausmann: How many. At first I didn’t have the feeling that it would affect me or that it would harm me much. That has really changed. I have a lot of respect for the disease. I’ve been 60 for a few days, a turning point in which you want to be as sure as possible that things will continue well. Exactly that – at least for the next year – can only be seen vaguely, robs you of the fun, but not the fun of life, because more should happen.
–
Are you planning a DNP in 2021?
–
Schulze-Hausmann: Of course I am planning a DNP in the coming year!
