The German Police arrested this Saturday a man suspected of planning with the Islamic State (ISIS) an attack against the Israeli Embassy in Berlin. The arrest occurred in the city of Brandenburg, in the middle of a strong police operation that included special forces, and would have frustrated the terrorist group’s objective.
According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, the subject was identified as Omar A., a 28-year-old Libyan citizen who lived in Bernau, near the capital, under the status of an asylum seeker.
A spokesperson maintained that “there are indications that he planned an attack against the Israeli Embassy in Berlin” and that, in turn, he is “suspected of being a member of a foreign terrorist group,” which he later specified as ISIS. Although the precise reasons that led to his arrest are not yet known, the German media Bild assures that it was information from text messages alluding to explosives, intercepted by intelligence services abroad.
That is why, at the moment, the charges against him are for providing support to a terrorist organization abroad.
Along with the arrest, police raided the rooms of a witness not directly involved in Sankt Augustin, North Rhine-Westphalia, and confiscated mobile phones and other devices, although no weapons or explosives were found. Testimonies were also taken from some people present, but none of them were detained.
From the Israeli diplomatic headquarters they acknowledged to the German Press Agency that they were aware of the existence of a plan to attack the mission and, therefore, ambassador Ron Prosor thanked the authorities for acting in time and “guaranteeing the safety” of all staff.
The suspect will remain in custody until this Sunday afternoon, when he is scheduled to testify before an investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe. At the end it will be known if he will remain in preventive detention or if he will be released.
After hearing the news, the Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia, Herbert Reul, assured that “the security of Jewish institutions has the highest priority” in the country and celebrated that “today’s case was a success but, at At the same time, it was a warning to those who want to threaten Jewish life in Germany.”
“We are in their footsteps!” he concluded.
The threat against the diplomatic headquarters occurs at a time of great tension in the Middle East, after Israel launched important maneuvers against groups close to Iran – such as Hamas and Hezbollah -, which aroused the anger of the Persian regime and the terrorist militias. in the region.
