The German NFL Players: Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jakob Johnson, Equanimeous St. Brown, David Bada, and Marcel Dabo

Follow us on:

There are currently five players active in the NFL. Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brother Equanimeous St. Brown as well as Jakob Johnson are actively playing for their teams, while David Bada is on the Commanders’ injured list and Marcel Dabo is waiting for his chance on the Colts’ practice squad.

All German football players in the NFL

Amon-Ra St. Brown

In contrast to many of his German colleagues, Amon-Ra St. Brown had a typical football career. He went to high school, played football and decided to play college with the USC Trojans. He had many offers as he was highly sought after by colleges as a 5-star recruit.

Amon-Ra St. Brown has been playing in Detroit since 2021. The Lions signed him in the fourth round (pick 112) as the 17th receiver of his draft year. So far, apart from a few minor injuries, the German has had an exemplary career. When he’s fit, he plays outstandingly (912 yards and 5 touchdowns in his rookie year; 1,161 yards and 6 touchdowns in his second year). He quickly worked his way up to becoming the first wide receiver in Detroit.

Jakob Johnson

Jakob Johnson found his way from the Stuttgart Scorpions to the NFL in 2019 via the International Player Pathway program. From 2019 to 2021 he played for the New England Patriots and was able to demonstrate his qualities primarily as a front blocker.

He has been considered one of the best fullbacks in the league for years and has had no problems finding a place on a team since arriving in the NFL, even though the fullback position seems to be dying out.

In 2022 he followed his then offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to the Las Vegas Raiders. It is still there today. In the 2022/23 season he delivered strong performances week after week and helped his running back Josh Jacobs to the NFL rushing yards title.

Equanimeous St. Brown

Equanimeous St. Brown came to the NFL in a similar way to his younger brother. He played in high school and was then recruited by Notre Dame. In college, the wide receiver was able to recommend himself for the next level, especially with a strong sophomore season (961 yards, 9 touchdowns).

In 2018, the Green Bay Packers drafted him with pick 207 in round 6. His first season was mixed. He was able to draw attention to himself with good plays, but in the end he only managed 328 yards without a touchdown. He missed his second year with an injury, which is why he played almost no role for the Packers after that. He has been under contract with the Chicago Bears since 2022 and was able to prove his role as an important supplementary player with 323 yards and a touchdown.

David Bada

David Bada is a native of Munich and came to the NFL in 2020 from the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. The 28-year-old was used in the last two games of last season or made his debut. He has recorded two tackles so far, both in his first NFL game against the Cleveland Browns.

The Commanders’ defensive tackle is currently injured. He tore his triceps in early August and is currently on the injured list in Washington.

Marcel Dabo

Marcel Dabo used to play football and only came to American football in 2015 through a student exchange. After several positions in the youth sector, the defensive back played in the ELF for the Stuttgart Surge. After making the ELF All-Star team in 2021, he came to the NFL to the Indianapolis Colts via the International Pathway program.

Dabo didn’t make any of the 32 53-Men rosters at the start of the season. He is currently on the Colts’ practice squad and is waiting to be called up to the active roster by the Colts or one of the 31 other teams.

The best German NFL players of all time

Historically, Germany doesn’t have the most illustrious football history, but some German players have achieved good performances in the NFL. In addition, some of these players are also responsible for the German “football euphoria”.

Björn Werner

Björn Werner showed his qualities early on and went to FSU (Florida State Seminoles) as a 5-star recruit. The pass rusher also knew how to impress there and was the only German to date to secure a place in the first round of the NFL draft.

The Indianapolis Colts signed him with pick 24 in 2013. Unfortunately, his career with the Colts was marked by injuries. He played his last game in 2015 and had to end his career in 2017. Overall, he only had 81 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

After his playing days in the NFL, Werner made a career in television. For years he played a key role in the ran broadcasts and will commentate for RTL from the 2023 season. He also has the successful podcast “Football-Bromance” together with Patrick Esume.

Sebastian Vollmer

Sebastian Vollmer probably had the best career of a German NFL player to date. He played for the Houston Cougars until 2008 and won the Armed Forces Bowl.

In 2009, the left tackle was drafted by the Patriots in round 2 (pick 58). Until 2016 he was the life insurance policy for Tom Brady. He won two Super Bowls in New England, but had to end his career after just seven seasons due to injury problems (hip injury).

Since 2017 he has been on the microphone as a commentator for ran and later DAZN. In 2023 he moved to RTL and comments on the NFL there as an expert.

Markus Kuhn

Markus Kuhn found his way into the NFL in 2012 through North Carolina State University. The New York Giants drafted the defensive tackle with pick 239 in round 7. He made headlines in 2014. He was the first German ever to score a touchdown.

Kuhn played football until 2015. He started at #ran-Football in the same year and worked there as a columnist and commentator.

Kasim Edebali

Kasim Edebali came to the New Orleans Saints as an undrafted rookie in 2014. The defensive end played there until 2017 and later for the Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals. He didn’t really play a big role for either defense during his career. But he knew how to impress as a special teams member and was one of the better players in the league in this discipline.

Edebali played in the NFL until 2018, for the Hamburg Sea Devils from 2021 to 2022 and will commentate on the ELF at ran from 2023.

Markus Koch

Markus Koch played high school and then college at Boise State. In 1986 he was taken with the 30th pick in round 2 of the NFL draft by the Washington Redskins.

By 1992, the defensive end played 68 games there and recorded a total of 10.5 sacks. Koch also won the Super Bowl twice during this time. He was the first German to win the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy.
