Pre-election thriller in Bulgaria: Vanya Grigorova, candidate of a coalition between the BSP and the new formation “The Left!”, made a strong appearance at the run-off election for mayor of Sofia on Sunday.
According to the current count, only a few thousand votes fell short of Grigorova defeating the liberal-conservative favorite Vasil Terziev.
Given the extremely small margin and the attempts to influence the election, Grigorova will demand a review of the preliminary results.
What is already certain is that the trade unionist, who is a supporter of the class struggle and mass trade unionism, caused a sensation by entering the second round and the direct competition with Terziev. And this was achieved by her, despite facing both a scandalous media campaign and the apparatuses of the big-money parties that have dominated Sofia for decades.
Vanya Grigorova and her coalition reached many people and mobilized them for the social cause with trust, broad civic participation and clear demands. This is a fighting challenge from the left, which will have an impact both outside the elections and outside Sofia.
