The German, French and Polish foreign ministers agree on a common course in relations with Lukashenko

During their meeting in Weimar on Friday, the foreign ministers of Germany, France and Poland agreed to follow a common course in relations with the leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.

“The situation in Belarus is a disgrace to Europe,” said German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas, accusing Lukashenko of using repression to bring peace to the country.

The German Foreign Minister also condemned Lukashenko’s threat to allow mass migration to European Union (EU) member states.

In recent months, many migrants, mainly from the Middle East, have crossed Belarus’ borders with Latvia, Lithuania and Poland.

The European Union believes that Belarus is deliberately facilitating the flow of refugees to EU countries in retaliation for sanctions, although the Belarussian regime denies this.

Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau called for a common position against the Lukashenko regime.

“In times of crisis, it is important that we show solidarity,” Rau said.

He noted that Poland was following the situation in Belarus and Lukashenko’s efforts to centralize power with a restless heart.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Ledria also emphasized the need for co-operation.-

Ministers from Germany, Poland and France met in the so-called Weimar Triangle format, which was established in 1991. At the time, the group’s goal was to build closer relations between the three countries, but over the years, enthusiasm for the project has waned.
