The Genetic Basis of ADHD: Debunking Misconceptions

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common problem, especially among children, and it may persist with the person until adulthood. The person may also suffer from symptoms such as: difficulty paying attention, excessive movement, and extreme impulsivity. Dr. Mohamed Mahmoud Hamouda, a teacher and consultant in psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine, Al-Azhar University, told “Youm7” that ADHD is a genetic neuropsychiatric disorder that has nothing to do with parental mistreatment, adding that mistreatment of the child, of course, increases the symptoms of ADHD. He explained that a child with this disorder is born with hereditary genes for hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder, noting that it is a genetic disease in first-degree relatives, especially in fathers, as 8% of parents with hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder transmit the disease to their children.

Dr. Muhammad Mahmoud Hamouda confirmed that the main factor for hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder is biological, because the frontal cortex of the brain cannot control impulsivity, movement, and attention as a result of a deficiency in the neurotransmitter dopamine.

He continued, saying that not treating ADHD makes the child move to worse stages, as he may develop stubbornness disorder as well as many behavioral problems.
