The GDR’s Accusations: Federal Republic’s Employment of Nazi Criminals Revealed through Recorded Trials

Since the two German states were founded in 1949, the GDR has accused the Federal Republic of uncritically employing Nazi criminals in politics and administration. To make this clear, the GDR judiciary conducted several criminal trials, which they had recorded on tapes.

In 1960, for example, in absentia against the Nazi ideologue Theodor Oberländer, who served as refugee minister in Konrad Adenauer’s cabinet. The Waffen SS lieutenant Heinz Barth, in turn, took part in the Oradour massacre and was sentenced to life imprisonment as a GDR citizen in 1983. The show trial against Chancellor Hans Globke in 1963 became particularly well known.
