Famine threatens the north of the Gaza Strip in a context of intensification of operations by the Israeli army, and an almost total interruption of food aid, a report published by the UN warned this Saturday.
The Israeli military responded by questioning the report and arguing that it is based on “partial and biased data.”
The Integrated Food Security Classification Framework (IPC) report warns of “an imminent and substantial likelihood of famine due to the rapidly deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip.”
“Famine thresholds may already have been exceeded or will be exceeded in the near future,” the report estimates.
On October 17, a previous CPI report, prepared by NGOs and UN agencies, including the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), estimated that some 345,000 Gazans would face “catastrophic” levels of hunger. » between November and April 2025, which is equivalent to 16% of the population.
Collapse of food systems
This assessment corresponds to the highest level of the Integrated Food Security Classification Framework, level 5 (3: crisis, 4: emergency, 5: catastrophe).
Since that date the situation deteriorated in the north of the Gaza Strip, with the collapse of food systems, the decrease in humanitarian aid and a critical situation in terms of water, sanitation and hygiene, the report highlights.
“Therefore it can be estimated that hunger, malnutrition and increased mortality due to malnutrition and disease are increasing rapidly,” the text details.
The Israeli Army questioned the quality of the report. “All IPC assessments have been proven incorrect and inconsistent with the situation on the ground,” he responded in a statement.
According to the Army, 39,000 trucks with more than 840,000 tons of food have entered the Gaza Strip in the last two months.
