The Gault&Millau Wine Guide 2023: Celebrating Innovations, Honoring Wine Personality of the Year, and Showcasing Next Generation Winemakers

MUNICH (December 5, 2022) – The new Gault&Millau Wine Guide 2023 will be presented in Munich today and, in the thirtieth year of its existence, celebrates a host of innovations and superlatives. Gesine Roll, Weingut Weedenborn, is honored as wine personality of the year and for the first time there is an appreciation for the next generation of winemakers with the Next Generation. 12 new names will be honored by the G&M experts and the winemakers of the G&M Hall of Fame. Other innovations: South Tyrol is represented as a guest country with winegrowers and wines, with the new category “Readiness to drink” 750 wines are recommended, which counteract the optimal point of ripeness, and food pairing promises special enjoyment for the first time. The 800-page book is accompanied by an app that will be released at the same time.

The wine personality of the year is Gesine Roll (Weingut Weedenborn, Rheinhessen), who, as a clever strategist and passionate fighter with great vision, has further developed her father’s business. The result is unique character wines, primarily Sauvignon Blancs, which are unique in Germany in terms of the expression and multifaceted nature of this grape variety. For the first time, the guide honors promising winemakers in the “Next Generation” category who have just taken over their parents’ business, work with them or have founded their own winery. Bastian Benny (Rhine-Hesse), Sophie Christmann (Palatinate), Philipp and Kilian Giegerich (Franconia), Katharina and Rebecca Heger (Baden), Simon Hornstein (Württemberg), Moritz Kissinger (Rhine-Hesse), Maximilian Kusterer (Württemberg), Stefanie and Fabian Lassak (Württemberg), Clemens Rosenkranz (Rheingau), Martin Schmitt (Franconia), Franz Werheim (Palatinate) and Matthias Wörner (Baden) are the chosen ones. The selection was made by the Gault&Millau “Hall of Fame” with the G&M experts.

New content

When is the best time to open and enjoy a wine with great aging potential? This is a frequently asked question and so the guide lists more than 750 wines that are ready to drink and are already revealing their potential. Also new is the “Fill the Fridge” section, which lists wines that cost up to 15 euros and that will bring great joy immediately. The German sparkling wines also enjoy a lot of attention in this guide: In the anniversary year of the Gault&Millau Wine Guide Germany, the publishers invited the colleagues from Gault&Millau France to organize a cross-border friendly game at eye level and to present these great sparkling wines together. Nina Mann, head sommelier at Victor’s Fine Dining (awarded 5 red toques in the G&M Restaurant Guide 2022) wrote the prelude to this.

Lots of service through top lists and international comparisons

With the juxtaposition of German sparkling wine and champagne in the guide, the publisher is responding in particular to the interest of readers who are looking for international comparisons. On the other hand, it bears witness to how impressive the renaissance of German sparkling wine culture has developed in recent years. And because there are always wines that are particularly impressive when comparing the ratings, the testers have also identified 250 wines that are presented in clear top lists and show the best of the very good white and red wines in the 2023 guide. Last but not least, the publisher, which also holds the Gault&Millau license rights for Italy, has included the wine region of South Tyrol in the book as the first wine-growing region outside of Germany: a total of 500 wines from the popular holiday destination on the southern edge of the Alps are presented.

Digitization of the pleasure worlds

The Gault&Millau app (in German and English) goes live at the same time as the Great Gault&Millau Wine Guide Germany 2023: It presents all the current tasting results, topics, portraits, recommendations and many projects from neighboring gourmet worlds. The readers have (free) access to the digital media of the publisher with a personal access code in the book. And because good wine is best enjoyed with a good meal, a food pairing service is integrated into the app. The Gault&Millau food pairing idea is aimed at a balanced combination that gives users another guide to classifying the wines themselves in terms of taste and to experiencing excellent compositions of food and wine. Specific wines that have been tasted and rated for the 2023 guide are suggested.#

Proven method

The Gault&Millau tasters re-evaluated a total of 8,000 wines and 800 wineries this year. The tasting takes place in panels of four to six proven professionals from the German and international wine industry, who are presented in the book, as well as invited guests who, as additional experts, supplement the tastings with their knowledge and experience. The tastings are led and structured by Dr. Hannah-Fink Eder, publisher and Otto Geisel, head of the tasting team and sworn expert for wine evaluation. All tastings are blind, divided into grape variety, vintage and quality classes.
