The GameStop conflict will make the leap to the cinema

At the end of January 2021 we were presented with a scandal on Wall Street that put our knowledge of economics to the test. Very few seemed able to explain what the heck members of the Reddit r / WallStreetBets sub-forum had done in a way that would be understood by everyone, but the results were more or less clear: these pesky speculators had beaten Wall Street on their own. own game, turning the stock market upside down and showing how arbitrary its operation is due to the excessive rise in the price of GameStop shares. A video game sales company that, before the earthquake, was on the verge of bankruptcy.

The same happened with AMC Theaters; chain of cinemas whose debt was unsustainable due to the pandemic ravages and which became the next beneficiary of the r / WallStreetBets. It is possible that the operation of the short sale of shares, vital to understanding what the hell happened, is still difficult to understand for much of the public, but the audiovisual has already come quickly to explore the phenomenon. Thus, a few weeks after everything happened, several projects have emerged that want to delve into this matter. This is the case, for example, of a film written by Mark Boal (the hurt Locker) and starring Noah Centineo a cargo de Netflix.

On the other hand, a documentary has already been announced, and MGM has acquired the rights to adapt the book The Antisocial Network, in charge of Ben Mezrich, before it is even published. Variety echoes in addition to a fictional film produced by HBO and Blumhouse Television (yes, it seemed inevitable that Jason blum peer into such a disturbing phenomenon) and led by Andrew Ross Sorkin. The latter is well qualified to address the subject, since in addition to co-creating the series Billions (also focused on stock market conflicts) wrote Too Big to Fail: An essay on the 2008 crisis that became a film also produced by HBO, directed by Curtis Hanson and titled Bad news in Spain.

None of these projects has a release date or associated team beyond the names cited, and it cannot be ruled out that in the next few days there will be other attempts to exploit a case whose consequences we are still far from fully discerning.
