As usual, the first main round of the 2020/21 DFB Cup was drawn before the start of the new Bundesliga season. We have all the information about the most important national soccer competition for you!

Which clubs take part in the 1st round?

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the game had to be suspended since March 2020, so that not all clubs have been determined that will take part in the first main round. Many participants from the state associations qualified on August 22, 2020 on the final day of the amateurs, but not all participants have been determined yet. The DFBCup– The draw for the first main round was therefore carried out with placeholders for the participants from the regional associations.

  • 36 teams from the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga
  • The four first-placed teams from the 3rd league (since FC Bayern II came first, the fifth-placed team moves up): Würzburger Kickers, Eintracht Braunschweig, FC Ingolstadt, MSV Duisburg
  • 21 national cup winners
  • Three representatives from the three largest regional associations (Bavaria, Lower Saxony, Westphalia)

Date: When does the first round of the DFB-Pokal take place?

The first main round will be held from September 11th to 14th, 2020. Thus, the cup matches will ring in the new season of German professional football, as the Bundesliga will not start playing again until the following weekend.

The only exception is the clash between FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Düren. At the request of the Champions League winner, the game will be played on October 15 at 8.45 p.m.

  • 2nd / 3rd February 2021: Round of 16
  • 2nd / 3rd March 2021: quarter-finals
  • 1./2. May 2021: semi-finals

The final will be broadcast live on free-to-air television as well as on pay-TV. The first and also Sky report in detail about the games. Parallel to the broadcast on TV, the ARD in the media library and also Sky via SkyGo and Sky Ticket additionally a live stream.

A total of 64 teams will be competing in the DFB Cup in the 2020/2021 season. The record cup winner is FC Bayern Munich, who also won the final against Bayer 04 Leverkusen last season.

Is the video evidence used in the DFB Cup?

Yes, but not in all games. The referees have been able to call in the video assistant in disputed situations since the 19/20 season from the round of 16. In the two previous seasons, this was only allowed from the quarter-finals. The games of the 1st and 2nd round had to do without video evidence so far.

Who is the record winner of the DFB Cup?

With 20 cup wins in 24 finals, FC Bayern Munich is the record winner of the DFB Cup. Behind Bayern are Werder Bremen with six wins in ten finals in second place, followed by Schalke 04 and Eintracht Frankfurt with five wins each (with twelve and eight finals respectively).
