The Game Awards 2023 – through the eyes of the PPE.pl editorial team

Roger: The beginning of the event with Christopher Judge, the voice of Kratos from God of War, referring to the too long speech of the mentioned gentleman at the previous gala, is the humor I would like to see at this type of galas. Just like the insult to Call of Duty. In turn, the presence of such stars as Matthew McConaughey or Anthony Mackie at the gala invariably increases its prestige, although I still believe that the event is too long and drawn out. I had the impression that this year there were more talking heads and advertisements than last year, and after an hour of the event it was clear that there was not enough meat. Exodus intrigued me, Hellblade delighted me again (where is the date, where?), Kojima as usual surprised me (but I would prefer something from Death Stranding 2), the return of the Mana series made me happy, and the trailer of the second part of the Final Fantasy VII remake calmed me down, but the staying overnight wasn’t really worth it. Blade is a big surprise, but after Redfall from Arkane I will remain skeptical for now. Another thing is that we had already had the opportunity to play some of the games presented in the second part of the event in the editorial office, so there was no surprise effect. For such a great year with great hits, the awards gala itself is a bit of a disappointment.

Wojtek: The Game Awards 2023 is full of announcements, but I can actually name on one hand the real surprises I’m waiting for. The situation only confirms one thing – next year will not be as strong as the last 12 months, and may even be much weaker. At the event, we saw a lot of advertisements, short materials and… definitely the most interesting game is Blade. Arkane has received a great IP and I’m counting on a real one. I can’t wait for Monster Hunter Wilds, but unfortunately – the premiere will not take place until 2025. I’m intrigued by the OD, I’m waiting for more information about Exodus, and Rise of The Ronin looks really good… I’d love to play God of War, I’m waiting for the final release date of Hellblade 2, but again – something’s missing here.

Matthew: Ubisoft Forward and Microsoft’s summer event is still the best events of this year. TGA 2023 wasn’t bad, but there were no release dates for the most desired games in 2024. Hellblade 2 is still a big unknown, where is Silent Hill 2 Remake or STALKER 2? In addition, the multitude of advertisements in this edition of TGA was terrifying. On the plus side, there are several new announcements, including Blade and Exodus from the creators of Mass Effect, but in the latter case there is still a long way to the premiere. We are only happy that the game of the year award went to Baldur’s Gate 3, because it is a masterpiece that restores faith in games that we will remember for decades to come.

Igor: This year’s The Game Awards is so… Kind of cool, kind of meh, but it had its moments. The biggest surprise is Blade by Arkane and OD by Hideo Kojima – personally, I expected Death Stranding 2 to be shown. The highlight of the show? Definitely Monster Hunter Wilds – the trailer wasn’t great, but it showed the most important change. From now on, the maps will be really full of life, which was sorely lacking before. I was disappointed by quite a lot of poor advertisements and crap presentations of game services. I am also positively surprised by the three awards for Microsoft and the presentation of the new game by the authors of No Man’s Sky. Unfortunately, the rest was very meh – even the croissant mode for God of War Ragnarok. Game of the year? Baldur’s Gate 3, of course, and the armored guy on stage won it all.

Łukasz: I knew more or less what to expect, but this year’s TGA provided interesting and “funny moments” performances by the hosts and guests on stage. It kept the emotions alive, although too many commercials made me feel sleepy at times. We received many smaller and larger game announcements, previously known (FF7: Rebith) and completely new IPs (e.g. Last Sentinel), turkeys and stronger titles (the great-looking Black Myth: Wukong), most of which we will play in 2024 / 2025 – some of them quite soon, like the new free DLC for God of War (Valhalla). The awards ceremony itself – Baldur’s Gate 3 was my type and I wasn’t wrong, it won awards, although it was a thrill. And when Matthew McConaughey, known for his brilliantly played character in the 1st season of True Detective, appeared on the stage, he presented Exodus with a wit and his own sense of humor. So I’m really looking forward to what I saw, hoping for a great and action-packed production. Hideo Kojima also appeared, accompanied by Jordan Peele, a screenwriter and director of quite good horror films. During the show, there were also completely off-the-wall titles, such as Big Walk, which I definitely don’t buy, or at least I can’t understand. Nevertheless, an interesting and calm middle, as well as some interesting materials, assured me that this could be an interesting, but not a breakthrough year (2024) for video games, although this year’s awards ceremony (TGA 2023) was quite pleasant to watch at times, apart from some exceptions. In conclusion, congratulations to the best game of the year – Baldur’s Gate 3.
