Closed since 2014, the sports facility will be able to welcome the public again from Tuesday 10 January. The only swimming pool in the Bastide district on Bordeaux’s right bank, its construction site has suffered numerous delays and an additional cost of 11.5 million euros.
It’s a long overdue reopening. Built in the 1970s, the Galin swimming pool has been closed to the public since 2014 following the discovery of asbestos in the ventilation ducts. The works started at the end of 2019. Due to Covid and supply problems, the delivery, originally scheduled for summer 2021, had to be postponed several times.
From Tuesday 10 January 2023, Bordeaux residents will finally be able to enjoy the swimming pool. The latter can accommodate up to 400 people in the summer. School groups are expected from next week. The equipment consists of a large, a medium and a children’s pool, heated respectively to 27°C; 28.5°C and 31°C.
Urban heat
Mathieu Hazouard, deputy mayor of Bordeaux in charge of sport, cites the “environmental aspect” of the project, coupled with its “functionality”:
“The work focused on two aspects: improving the conditions of use. A new 50 m children’s pool2 In addition to a green space, an outdoor solarium with games for children was created. The pool is connected to the district heating network. There is a rock stone filtration system, which allows you to optimize water quality and consumption. »
The rehabilitation site, led by Atelier Ferret Architecture, incurred an additional cost of €11.5m, bringing the final bill to €20m, funded by local authorities and the National Sports Agency.
Diversity
Françoise Frémy, deputy mayor of the Bastide district, welcomes the opening of sports facilities in a district whose “population has doubled” in just a few years:
“There are real needs for schoolchildren and young people in Benauge. This is a reopening that everyone has been waiting for. Like culture, sport is a guarantee of social diversity and this is important in a neighborhood like this. »
This reopening should allow work to continue on the other pools in the city. The Grand Parc swimming pool is thus closed until August 2023. Then, in 2024, it will be the turn of the Jewish swimming pool, whose work will take place in two phases, allowing access to one of the two pools during construction.
