The Galaxy Z Flip 5: Durability Test and Resistance to Extreme Conditions

KOMPAS.com – Samsung has officially launched its foldable smartphone duo at the end of last July. One of the new mobile phones introduced is the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the successor to the Galaxy Z Flip 4 which was launched last year.

The upgrade that is presented is a new hinge construction, which allows the device to be tightly closed, without any gaps near the hinge (hinge). The hinges are also designed with increased durability.

Well, recently, a YouTuber discovered that the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s screen can last twice as long as Samsung claims. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Z Flip 5 screens can be opened and closed with a resistance of 200,000 times, which is accompanied by Bureau Veritas (BV) certification.

However, an experiment conducted by a YouTuber with the name Mrkeybrd shows that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 screen can last up to 400,000 folds.

He tried folding the Galaxy Z Flip 5 for a day to find out how many folds the device can withstand and whether the smartphone can still function properly or not.

Just like the title of the uploaded video, “The Z Flip Survived Over 400K Folds!”, Youtubers found that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 can survive the fold 401,146 times. This brand-new device made by Samsung can indeed be used and functions properly. However, there are some changes.

The hinge of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has problems when extended or unfolded. The device body does not extend straight, but bends slightly downwards.

Intrigued by the series of trials that were carried out? The following is a folding and durability test conducted by Mrkeybrd, as summarized by KompasTekno from its YouTube channel.

Compared to Motorola Razr 40 Ultra

In the video that lasts 1 minute 42 seconds, the YouTuber gives a brief snippet of the durability and folding tests on the folding smartphone being tested. The test also compared two devices, namely the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Motorola Razr 40 Ultra.

However, unfortunately the Mororola Razr 40 Ultra was damaged first at the 126,266th fold. Therefore, further testing was only carried out on one device, namely the Galaxy Z Flip 5 only.

Water resistance

Test the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in water for 30 minutes

The second test, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 was folded and stretched in a water box for 30 minutes. The device passed both tests and is still working fine.

According to Mrkeybrd, the fold and water resistance tests significantly affected the construction of the device’s hinges. The folds that have been made are starting to experience differences, but in terms of functionality, the device still works well.

“After being folded and unfolded without any problems, we decided to place it in the water for 30 minutes. This of course has an impact on the hinge and weakens its strength a little. However, the device can still function,” said Mrkeybrd.

The device’s resistance to water is likely because the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has pocketed IPX8 certification. That is, the device can be protected from standing water, or submerged in water.

Extreme temperature resistance

Another test, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is also folded in a hot room. From the video shown, the room temperature is 74.5 degrees Celsius.

Volunteers who fold and unfold use gloves to avoid overheating. However, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 can still function properly, the device screen does not display lines, or smudges/smears/other notes.

The Galaxy Z Flip 5 was then tested on ice cubes. The device is unfolded upside down so that the screen is placed on a pile of ice cubes. This trial was also able to pass the device without any problems.

Test the fold of the Galaxy Z Flip 5 after mixing it with flour, milk, sugar and eggs

The next test is to bury the Galaxy Z Flip 5 in the sand. Then, mix again flour, milk, sugar, and eggs.

The device is combined into the “dough” and mixed together by hand. After mixing the dough, the device is folded again when cleaned using running water.

However, after thousands of folds, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 started showing issues. As mentioned above, the hinges of the device cannot be fully extended. The hinge of the device bends slightly towards the bottom.

In addition to the hinges, the device screen also appears pink lines. The line looks quite faint and must be seen carefully. Because, the location of the line is near the bezel (screen frame) on the left.

“After a thousand folds, a line appears (on the screen) and this is the end. The hinge can still work when it is closed, but cannot stay in this position (expanded),” closed Mrkeybrd.

These findings prove that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 can withstand more folds than the company claims. This test also shows how resistant the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is to several extreme conditions at once.

As quoted by KompasTekno from The Verge, Sunday (13/8/2023), the Galaxy Z Flip 5’s ability to survive 400,000 folds allows the device to be used for more than 10 years. With a note, the fold of the cellphone is opened 100 times a day.
