The Galaxy S21 will be Samsung’s cheapest 5G cellphone

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Samsung’s newest smartphone, the Galaxy S21, is likely to be the cheapest 5G mobile device.

According to industry sources, quoted from Yonhap, Saturday, Samsung is likely to release the Galaxy S21 for under 1 million won (around Rp. 12.9 million) in South Korea.

The Galaxy S21 series is expected to go on sale in South Korea on January 29, after debuting at the Galaxy Unpacked launch event on Thursday (14/1).

If the reported price of 999,000 won (around Rp.12.9 million) is correct, the Galaxy S21 will be Samsung’s cheapest 5G phone, and flagship first sold under 1 million won.

Samsung’s first 5G cellphone, the Galaxy S10 5G, was launched at a price of 1.397 million won or around Rp.18 million, while the Galaxy Note 10 was released at a price of 1.248 million won or around Rp.16.1 million in 2019.

Last year, the Galaxy S20 5G was sold for 1.248 million won, while the Galaxy Note 20 debuted at a price of 1.199 million won or around Rp. 15.3 million.

While the regular version of the Galaxy S21 is expected to sell for under 1 million won, industry insiders estimate the Galaxy S21 Plus will sell for 1.2 million won (approx. Rp.15.5 million) and the Galaxy S21 Ultra will be priced at 1.45 million. won (around Rp.18.7 million) in South Korea.

Market watchers see that by lowering the price of the Galaxy S21, Samsung can further maintain its status as the world’s top smartphone vendor against Apple, which has posted rapid sales of its first 5G phone, the iPhone 12, since its launch in October.

According to market researcher Strategy Analytics, Samsung had a 19.5 percent market share in smartphone shipments last year, which is the first time since 2011 that its market share fell below 20 percent.

Apple took the runner-up position with a 15.5 percent share in 2020 thanks to its iPhone 12 series, while Huawei fell to third with a 14.4 percent share.

For 2021, Strategy Analytics predicts Samsung’s market share to fall to 18.8 percent, while Apple is expected to increase to 16.4 percent.

To launch the Galaxy S21 series at a more affordable price, Samsung reportedly did not include a charger or charger in the box, and applied a data screen with Full HD + resolution for the S21 and S21 Plus.

However, the high-end variant of the S21 Ultra reportedly comes with a wide HD + quad curved display, and supports the S-Pen stylus.
