Russia’s actions “continue to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence,” according to a joint statement by the G7 foreign ministers.

“We unequivocally condemn Russia’s temporary occupation of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol,” the statement said. “Russia’s efforts to legitimize it are not and will not be recognized.”

Ministers accused Russia of committing human rights abuses on the peninsula and demanded access to international observers.

In the statement, ministers also recalled Moscow role in the conflict in Eastern Ukraine.

“We call on the Russian Federation to end the escalation of this conflict by providing financial and military support to the armed formations it supports in Eastern Ukraine, as well as granting Russian citizenship to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens,” the ministers said.

The G7 called for a diplomatic solution to the conflict.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014, it was expelled from the world’s elite club G8, as it was known at the time.

Punishing Russia for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilization of eastern Ukraine, The European Union, ASV and other Western countries have imposed sanctions on many of Russia’s top officials, the people of the Kremlin’s immediate circle, and the financial, defense and energy sectors of the Russian economy.

In the conflict in eastern Ukraine, 13,000 people have lost their lives and almost three million have fled.
