The future Sommières high school will be named after Lucie Aubrac

On March 14, the day of commemoration of the death of the French resistance fighter Lucie Aubrac, the president of the Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée Region, Carole Delga, and the mayor of the commune of Sommières, Pierre Martinez, announced in a joint forum. signed their choice to give the name of this exceptional woman to the future high school of Sommières (Gard). The Occitanie Region decided in 2016 to build a new high school in the town of Sommières, with the ambition, she recalls, to respond to the significant demographic pressure observed in this sector of the department.

« On March 14, 2007, France mourned the disappearance of a Resistance heroine to the Nazi occupation and the Vichy regime. The Gard, his adopted land, land of the Maquisards, saw the departure of a contemporary heiress of the spirit of Marie Durand and the Camisards. Obviously, the Occitanie Region has decided, with the agreement of the family and the municipality, to baptize the new Sommières high school, which will open its doors in September 2021, Lucie Aubrac. This choice will give our youth the opportunity to discover the journey of this exceptional woman, who, in the face of adversity, did not wait for things to change but fought for change, for freedom, for ‘humanity. », Signed Carole Delga and Pierre Martinez in a common forum.

This establishment, on a site located about 2km from the historic city center of Sommières, aims to reduce the workforce of the Geneviève De Gaulle-Anthonioz high school in Milhaud, which has reached its maximum capacity, but also to significantly reduce the time spent route for high school students residing in the communities furthest from their sector high school.
