What is Wordpad?

WordPad is a basic text editing application that allows you to create and edit documents with rich text and include images and links to other files.

Since 1995, Microsoft has automatically installed it in its Windows, offering users a basic word processor and document editor integrated directly into the operating system; Wordpad can be considered an alternative to the paid MS Word program.

“WordPad is no longer updated and will be removed in a future version of Windows,” he claims Microsoft on its website. “We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents such as .doc and .rtf formats, and Notepad for common text documents such as .txt.”

The WordPad discontinuation notice is not accidental. After all, Microsoft started this already in February 2020, when it released Windows 10 Insider Build 19551, which turned this once important part of the system into an optional add-on, writes the Bleeping Computer server. Although Wordpad is still pre-installed by default in Windows, it can be uninstalled using the “Optional Features” control panel.

Sooner or later, Wordpad will face the same fate as another popular application – Painting, which moved to the Microsoft Store with the arrival of the autumn Windows 10 Creator’s Update in July 2017.

It will all depend on the response of Windows users. If Microsoft’s move upsets them, it is likely that the American company will also move the program to its official store, where it would remain available as a less functional replacement for MS Office.
