The Future of Winter Sports in Saudi Arabia: Triple Ski Area and Neom Project

Saudi Arabian is not only known for its investments in football, led by stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Neymar Jr. and last Robert Mancini. While football may be in the spotlight, especially through the efforts of Prinz Mohammed bin Salmanbut the kingdom looks beyond the green lawn.

The country is gearing up to host the Asian Winter Games in 2029, although the planned venue so far only exists on the map. A place in the midst of the imposing backdrop of the Jabal al-Lawz mountain that rises a proud 2,580 meters above sea level. Despite its altitude, this place seems rather atypical for winter sports, since snowfall is rare and temperatures often exceed 10 degrees during the day.

The planned ski area, located in the north-west of the country and not far from the Jordanian border and the Gulf of Aqaba, will be Triple called. It is only a small part of the ambitious Neom-project. This visionary project also envisages The Line, a vertical city in the middle of the desert, Oxagon, a center for studies and research, and Sindalah, an island on the Red Sea that is said to be the most luxurious in the world.

The ski area Triple stands out with 36 kilometers of ski slopes and a three-month ski season accompanied by a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. The first steps for Neom are already under way, although there are concerns – both in relation to the environment and local working conditions. The exciting thing is that it will still be six years before the competition opens.
