The Future of Ukraine and Moldova’s Membership in the EU: Insights from Gobiņš

According to Gobiņš, this also means targeted observance of the EU’s interests, as the bloc’s interests include Ukraine’s membership in the EU and prosperous, safe, democratic neighboring countries.

The president of the “European Movement in Latvia” association stated that the process of Ukraine’s admission to the EU will be difficult and longer than one might want.

Gobiņš pointed out that it is currently difficult to predict the timetable for admission, because in December a rather high threshold must be overcome – all EU member states must agree to start negotiations, where “Russia’s servant” Hungary could come up with some “surprises”.

“In the future, the interests of both the EU member states and Ukraine will have to be reconciled. This process will also be complicated. We saw that the agricultural sector is still a sensitive topic for many of Ukraine’s friends, including Poland,” said the president of the “European Movement in Latvia” association.

Commenting on the situation in Moldova, Gobiņš stated that in this case the situation is complicated due to internal politics. Likewise, the influence of Russian disinformation on Moldovan society is much greater than in Ukraine. The public’s sympathy for EU membership is also not nearly as great.

“If there is no significant public support, reforms and changes will also be painful and not easy, thus it could be more difficult for Moldova to move forward. The entry of both countries into the EU will largely depend on the continuation of the war and the victory of Ukraine, as well as on what there will be Russian disinformation that could infect the minds of Moldovans,” said the president of the association “European Movement in Latvia”.
